Biofuels and Climate Change: Farmers’ Land Use Decisions Research
2nd Annual Program Review and Symposium

The Biofuels and Climate Change group held its 2nd Annual External Advisory Board Meeting at The Commons, University of Kansas, on Aug. 24 through 26, 2011. About 40 people attended the symposium portion of the review, on Aug. 25, to learn more about the project through research presentations given by several members of the BCC team.

A reception that evening at the Spencer Museum of Art highlighted the work of Larry Schwarm, professor of art/photography at Emporia State University, who specializes in Kansas landscape and rural photography. The BCC group is embarking on a project with Schwarm, in which he will help document farm and rural life in photos, helping the BCC team tell the story of farm life they are discovering through extensive surveys and interviews with Kansas farmers.

The advisory board members in Lawrence for review were Kathleen E. Halvorsen, professor of natural resource policy, Michigan Technological University; Robert T. Walker, professor of geography, Michigan State University; and Steven Wallander, economist, USDA Economic Research Service (ERS). Unable to attend was Mark Lapping, Distinguished University Professor of Planning and Public Policy and Executive Director of the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine.
